The charts illustrate the results of a 2015 survey into the reasons why people partake in sports. The overall findings are outlined, as are the results for men and women separately.
Principally, it is evident that the majority of people cited improving their fitness as the main motivation for partaking in sport, and this was true for both men and women. Other popular reasons for doing sports for both genders were to relax and for weight management purposes. Although there were slight variations in answers, the findings for both men and women were broadly similar.
Specifically, in terms of the reasons why men do sports, just over 80% cited improving their fitness as the main reason. The figure for women was closer to 90%. The second most popular reason for doing sports with men was to unwind and relax, with roughly 65% of respondents in the survey saying this. In contrast, relaxation was the third most popular res son why women do sports, the figure being slightly more than 70%.
With over 70% of respondents giving this reason, weight control was the second most common motivation for among women. Fewer than 60% of men cited the same motivation, making it the third most popular choice for that may suggest that women in general are slightly more concerned about their appearance than men.
A similar number of men and women (just under 60%) said they do sports to spend quality time with friends, making this the fourth most common reason for both genders. The proportion of men who cared about improving their sports skills was around 54%, whereas for women the figure was under 40%. Partaking for competitive reasons was the least common reason for both genders, but significantly more men than women cited competition as a motivation for playing sports – the difference was around 15%. This may indicate that men generally have a more competitive nature than women.
