Unit 3: Sizes and shapes | Vocabulary | A2

When we are talking about size, we generally use the adjectives ‘big’, ‘small’, etc.
We can measure the size of something in centimeters, metres, kilometers.
We can measure how long something is; we call this its length.
We can measure how high something is; we call this its height.
We can weigh something; we find out its weight.
We can measure age in years, month and days.

EXERCISE 1

Choose the questions below with the answers which follow:

1. How old is the baby? A. About 30 centimetres.
2. What's the length of your ruler? B. It's 35 cm x 55 cm.
3. How big is the poster? C. It's six months old.
4. How much does he weigh? D. I'm sure it's over 2 metres high.
5. What's the height of that door? E. At least 85 kilos, I should think.

We also need to describe the shape of things, as well as their colour, use, material i.e. what they are made of.

EXERCISE 7

Adjective Order

If we are describing something in terms of its various qualities, we probably need to use several adjectives. We must then decide the order of the adjectives e.g. whether colour comes before age in the description.The most common order for adjectives is as follows:
