The present perfect is formed by using the present tense of the verb to have and the past participle of the main verb.
E.G. I have seen that film. / He has seen that film.

The past perfect is formed in the same way, but the simple past of the verb to have is used instead of the present tense.
E.G. I had climbed that mountain. / He had climbed that mountain.

EXERCISE 1

You must make sure that you know the past participles of irregular verbs. Find the past participles of the verbs in the list below:

  ride eat try wear swim steal drink
past participle              

Now use these verbs to make questions in the present perfect, as in the example:

e.g. Have you ever ridden a donkey? (ride)

Make negative statements below, as in the example:

EXERCISE 3

Mike Ariel wants a job as a journalist. He sees an advertisement for a science and technology correspondent for CNN and he decides to apply for the job. Below is some information about him which he gave at his interview:

I have done a journalism course.
I've been to university.
I've studied physics and chemistry.
I've passed my driving test.
I've travelled around Europe.
I've been to the United States three times.
I've met a lot of famous people.
I've never worked for CNN before but.
I've wanted to for a long time.

What did Mike tell the CNN interviewer? Rewrite the sentences above, using the past perfect, as in the example:
