As if/ as though

As if / As though are used interchangeably to describe how someone or something looks, sounds, tastes or behaves.

■ He acted as if 1 as though he was mad.
■ You look as though / as if you are going to faint.

Rewrite these sentences with as if / as though.

Too, very, enough

Too before adjectives or adverbs suggests that it is so much that something negative comes as a result.

■ He works too slowly to have it ready in a week.

Very is an intensifier which means to a high degree, but does not necessarily imply a negative result.

■ He works very slowly.

Enough follows adjectives or adverbs but comes before nouns and is used:

a. with adjectives or adverbs meaning so much that something positive comes as a result,

■ He arrived early enough to catch the train.
■ He’s clever enough to understand.

b. with nouns meaning so much of it or so many of them that something positive comes as a result.

■ There’s enough food for everyone.

Use too, very, or enough to fill in the gaps.

Future perfect vs. Future Perfect Continuous

The Future Perfect (I will have done) is used:

a. for an action that will happen before a particular time in the future or before another future action. The result of the action will come up to the point of future time which is mentioned, or up to the time of the second action,

■ I will have finished by the time you come.

b. with just to describe an action that will have been completed only a short time before the point of future time mentioned, or before the time of the second action,

■ We will have just started eating at that time.

c. with for to describe a situation that began in the past, or will begin in the future, and will still be in effect at a later time in the future.

■ They will have been married for two years this coming June.

The Future Perfect Continuous (I will have been doing) is used:

for an action which will be in progress at a certain moment of future time, but which goes backwards in time for a period of time introduced by for.

■ She will have been studying English for three years by the end of this term.

Note: By, in the context of the example above, means no later than and is a preposition. The phrase by the time is used as a conjunction to introduce time clauses.

Correct the mistakes where necessary.
