Chúng ta sử dụng đại từ phản thân khi tân ngữ và chủ ngữ của động từ trong câu là cùng nói về một đối tượng (người/vật).
VD: The boy taught himself to play chess.
The boy vừa là chủ ngữ (He taught…)
vừa là tân ngữ (… taught himself)
Đại từ phản thân cũng được sử dụng sau giới từ
VD: Are you talking to yourself?

EXERCISE 2
(a) Martina made herself a sandwich.
(b) Martina made the sandwich by herself / on her own.
(c) Martina made the sandwich while she was on her own in the kitchen.
Trong câu đầu tiên, (a), Martina làm bánh sandwich và cô ấy cũng sẽ là người ăn bánh sandwich. Trong câu số hai, (b), điều hiển nhiên là Martina làm bánh sandwich mà không có sự giúp đỡ từ bất kì ai. Trong câu (c) nghĩa là Martina ở một mình khi cô ấy làm bánh sandwich.
