Non-defining relative clauses
Read this sentence: My cat, who is called Frisky, watches ‘Star Trek’.
The clause ‘who is called Frisky’ gives extra information. If we take out this clause, we still have a meaningful sentences. This is called a non-defining relative clause and is separated from the rest of the sentence by commas.
Defining relative clauses
Read this sentence: The man who lives upstairs likes Beethoven.
The clause ‘who lives upstairs’ is a defining relative clause because it defines the suject of the sentence, The man’. It is essential to the meaning of the sentence and cannot be omitted. It is not separated from the rest of the sentence by commas. You use defining relative clauses to say exactly which person or thing you are talking about.
